Over-caution?

So why is it that a laptop with 1GB of memory installed also turns up with virtual memory turned on?????

why?

cos of code page management (or whatever Apple are calling it this week). programs take up less RAM if VM is on (even if you're just adding 1Mb of 'virtual' space) as only the relevant parts are loaded in and out as required...

Ah, so the 'causing programs to randomly keel over and grind to a halt at critical moments' wasn't the original intention then? :-)
